Spike's adventure to the Duke Canine Cognition Center

I signed Spike up for a study at the Duke Canine Cognition Center on inhibitory control. I was not real sure what we were getting ourselves in to, but I thought it would be fun none the less. Once our application was accepted, we coordinated a time and off we went.

When we arrived, I of course getting a little turned around, had to call them for help. They met me in the parking lot and Spike was a cordial gentleman. We made our way inside where his behavior continued to amaze me. He was nice and friendly and curious about the new place. I didn't even need his ball to help!

The girls were all amazing and very welcoming. They explained the whole thing to me and of I went to the waiting room to watch on the video monitor. I was very skeptical of Spike conforming, but once the food started he was more than happy to do whatever was asked. He went through the first part with flying colors. they said he was the first dog to get all 10 out of 10 correct. What a proud Mommy moment!

OK, so the second half, Proud Mommy moment past, was a little more challenging. the temper tantrum started. He had a choice to go to the nice lady who would let him have the food and the grumpy lady who wouldn't let him have the food. Yes you guessed it, Spike wanted to win over the grumpy lady ( at least he was trying to make friends). When cuteness didn't work he stayed back at the start line and complained, hoping she would give in. Finally when he decided it was a lost cause he begrudgingly went to the nice lady and ate her treat. This was repeated 7 more times. some less complaining than others. In the end he won over the grumpy lady (or so he thought) and all was a joyous moment!

After that they played some ball with him and he was soooooo happy!!!

A few days later Spike was invited back for the second half of the study. We were very happy to go! I did not get lost this time and Spike knew where he was and was just so excited to be reunited with his friends. These 2 tests were much easier and Spike got A+ across the board. Yes, Proud mommy moment!

Spike's Freshman year was a success!

1. You Can Help Pets in Hot Cars

Rayne Nolte was in the parking lot of a Mankato, Minnesota, mall last week when she spotted Roxie, a Yorkie mix, trapped in a car. The temperature was 88 degrees with a heat index of 103, and the car's owner was gone.

You may have found yourself in Rayne’s situation before. Many pet parents believe that cracking a window is enough to keep their dogs cool in the car while they make a quick pit stop—but they couldn’t be more wrong. "Automobile temperatures can very quickly rise to dangerous levels; the average temperature increase in a parked car is 40 degrees, and the majority of this increase occurs in the first 15 to 30 minutes," says Dr. Louise Murray, Vice President of ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. When it’s 80 degrees outside, your car will be a staggering 114 degrees after 30 minutes!

Worse still, dogs can’t cool themselves down as easily as people, and once they overheat, they can suffer extensive organ damage or die. Luckily, Rayne made all the right moves. Follow her lead by taking these simple steps.

Step 1: Try to Locate the Pet Parent

Roxie’s people were nowhere in sight, so Rayne called mall security, who tried to find Roxie’s family through the loudspeaker. (You can ask most stores to do this.)

Step 2: Educate

Rayne couldn’t find Roxie’s pet parents, but if you do, explain the dangers of leaving a pet in a hot car. Make sure the pet gets out of the car as soon as possible.

Step 3: Call 911

Fourteen states have enacted specific laws that protect dogs in hot cars, as have many municipalities—but even in places lacking such a law, leaving an animal in a hot car may constitute cruelty.

Rayne and the mall security officers dialed 911. When the police pulled Roxie from the steamy vehicle, she was very ill but soon on the road to recovery.

Step 4: Pat Yourself on the Back

Pets are counting on people like you to save their lives. Rayne rescued Roxie just in time, and she made a full recovery! And according to the Mankato Free Press, the pet-sitter who left Roxie in the car was charged with a petty misdemeanor.

Spike's trip to Pet Smart

As some of you know Spike, my Jack Russel can be reactive at times, so I like to take him to special places on occasion.

Yesterday we took a trip to Pet Smart for a little training exercise and of course a toy. As I was getting Spike out of the car a group of young children were going into the store. I thought to myself, oh what bad timing :( , but decided I was here let's just do this thing. Thinking this may be the hardest part of our visit, I mustered up the courage and moved forward. After watering the fire hydrant we went through the doors to be confronted with those small children running around the store screaming, one might have thought I was visiting Chucky Cheese.

I stopped in between the doors and regrouped. I took a quick overview of Spike's body language, then had him "look" at me. He responded right away, and away we went in to the store. I had to ask for his attention just 2 more times before we were off in a quieter area of the store. Once there I had Spike do some of his "tricks" for me. This was just to refocus him on me and get rid of the tension. It worked (of course).

Don't you know as soon as he was released there was a large bin of Halloween toys. A pumpkin, ghost and a spider were there. I held each one out to Spike. He smelled the pumpkin, turned away from the ghost and then he took the spider and started squeaking it. It was his favorite. He carried it with us as we looked around the store. He would put it down occasionally to sniff a spot on the floor or another toy, but always picked it up when he was done. People walked past him, a kid was playing with some toys in the isle we walked down, and Spike proudly carried his spider around.

At this point I was feeling pretty good about our visit we had conquered a group of kids, a chocolate lab puppy who was following behind us and smells of other dogs who have visited. I decided to check out. I put the toy on the belt and paid for it. Spike being the polite pup he is sat nicely and waited (of course I thought it was for the toy). When the cashier bent over to give Spike the toy I had no time to give a warning, so i just calmly watched Spike's body posture. He stood up, sniffed the toy and sat back down. What a good boy. The cashier put the spider in the bag and asked if he could have a treat. I said of course, but this time said that he most likely would not let her pet him. He was just the little gentleman and nicely took the treat and I swear smiled at her. I am of course beaming at this point because it couldn't have gone any better.

Then out of no where comes this beautiful, high energy Golden practically pulling it's owner off her feet to come say hello. Mr. Manners disappeared and he growled, no barking though, I could not give my undivided attention because of course I was trying to sign the receipt. So I body blocked and he calmed down, but the Golden would not give up. As soon as I was able I moved him away a little and had him look at me. It totally shocked me when those little eyes met mine. He was still growling, but at least he was focused on me now. we moved a little farther away and the owner of the golden managed to get her dog out of the store.

Not so bad I thought after they were gone and Spike turned on the charm again. All in all it was a great trip. Spike enjoyed himself and we were able to leave with our heads held high. We still have lots of work to do, but we are on the right track!

Kozmo, formerly Henry, was rescued from a couple who were about to return him back to the Pound. They originally got him from the Pound when he was about a year old, and had him about 2 years. He came to me totally shut down, both physically and emotionally. He would not eat or have any contact with me whatsoever; someone in his past obviously had terribly abused Kosmo as any noise or sudden move sent him cowering.

I have had Kozmo for almost a year now and he has really started to come into his own. He LOVES the outdoors and is a very willing participant to walk anywhere you want to go. He can heal by your right side but also loves to sniff, and sneeze, at the ground. He is very playful, and especially loves to play kibble-toss, the spinning game and roll the tricky treat ball all around the house. He has been in doggie training with Superior Dog Training (http://www.privatedogtraining.com) for several months, and is now much more comfortable around people, although he prefers to be the greeter, rather than being greeted. He tends to ignore other dogs and animals.

I am moving across the country and am unable to take Kozmo with me. I would love to see him in a home with a big yard for him to stretch his legs, and a loving owner who can continue to bring him into his joy. He is a very unique and beautiful soul.

Kozmo just had all of his shots updated and is on heartworm medication and Frontline. I have a year's supply of heartworm medication and other doggie stuff to help in the transition.

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) dcided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine' . It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine..

Dogfighters Beware

Dear Friend,

Yesterday went to the dogs -- some 450 of them -- when federal law enforcement agencies, along with The HSUS, The Humane Society of Missouri, and the ASPCA raided multiple dogfighting operations around the country in what was the largest single day of actions against this blood sport in American history.

Clearly, the law is on our side -- and with organized dogfighting illegal everywhere and a felony in all 50 states, never in our five-decade fight against this vicious and bloody activity has our message been stronger: dogfighters are a dying breed.

In my blog today, I share two reports from our people who helped lead the action in the field and helped rescue the dogs. Their personal accounts showcase the significance of yesterday's amazing efforts and what they really mean for the dogs. I hope you'll read their stories -- and those of the animals.

Hershey and Spike on Vacation

I have to send out a great big THANK YOU to my Mom and Dad!!!

Hershey and Spike had a great time with you. Spike was happy to be home, but at the same time I could tell he missed you guys terribly. Spike walks once a day here at home and he seems to be looking for that second walk. He got so spoiled walking 2 times a day.

I know he enjoyed the Frisbee games with Grandmom and Pop pop also.

His best friend Saddie will be greeted with so much joy when he sees her next, I can tell he misses her. He tries to get Hershey to play, but that's just not happening.

Hershey loved his walks on the wild side. He is bored on our walks compared to the fun he had at his Grandparents house. He came home in Great health and walking like a champ.

Henry is settling back in, I now make sure I bring him apple slices every morning, and he gets a snack in the afternoon now because he squeaks at me.

Thank you so much Mommy and Daddy. The peace of mind knowing my best friends are all being taking care of by the best people ever just leaves me speechless. You are the BEST!!!

Germany

I promised pictures and I couldn't get them up while I was in Germany, so I will post some now and some later. To start off I will show you the beautiful view we had. This view is what we saw everyday from the window of our friends house. They are very lucky. This is the Heidelberg Castle. It is beautiful. You can tour parts of it and the grounds are beautiful.

We visited Rothenberg also. This is a walled city and so neat to walk around. We stopped and had coffee at an outside cafe, had lunch and

of course didn't miss a chance for ice cream.

Keep checking back for more fun in Germany, I will even do a dogs in Germany post. There were so many there, I only got a handful of pictures, but I will be sure to post them.

I will hopefully be learning how to get some pictures on this computer so I can post them here. We are certainly enjoying ourselves.

We had a girls day yesterday. Al went into the IBM office here to visit friends. All us girls went hiking, we hiked to three castles it was wonderful. Spike would have loved running around in the castle ruins.

Today we are off to Rotenburg, It should be a great day. The weather is beautiful.

My Mom and Dad seem to be surviving with 3 dogs. Thanks so much for taking care of them I know they are in the best hands ever.

Aren't computers wonderful!!

Here I am sitting in the house of a wonderful friend in Heldleberg, Gremany, Overlooking the river, with the Caste in the distance and sipping a glass of wine. We arrived Sunday morning, and spent the day with our wonderful friends, The Walkers!! We will be spending the week here with them (thanks Michelle for putting up with us)

We walked into Heidleberg and had a nice lunch. The weather is nice, a little overcast today, but warm.

Tonight I will get my first good sleep since leaving NC on Sat. There is a 6 hour time difference, so our body clocks are a little mixed up.

Hershey and Spike are vacationing at Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop's house ( my mom and dad) and I am sure being spoiled. Hopefully Spike is behaving himself!! I am sure Sadie is keeping him in line.

Hopefully my mom will not be tripping over Hershey to much because as most of you know when food is concerned Hershey is all over it!!

I know the weather this weekend is supposed to be beautiful so get out ther and enjoy an active day with your dogs. Remember the Easter egg hunt Next Sat.

As the rain gently falls in steady drops some dogs would prefer to stay dry inside, while others just don't care. As long as Spike is chasing his ball or Frisbee the weather is no concern.

Unfortunately the weather is not cooperating today. Since so far the weather people are right I suppose we will be looking at harder rains and thunderstorms later today, so I will have to call class off for today.

We will resume regular classes next Sat March 7th. Thanks and stay dry today.

Hide and seek, fetch up and down the stairs and a walk between the rain drops are all good things to do today. Of course curling up of the sofa with a good book or a great movie are also good options.

Rally Trial Feb 7-8, 2009

Congratulations Colleen and Charlie!! Charlie got his 1st title in Rally level 1 (RL1) this means his signature can now read, Charlie, RL1 and he got a beautiful ribbon.

Congratulations to Gail and Stella!! Stella came in 4th place. She got a beautiful white ribbon and stuffed horse toy.

All in all it was a wonderful weekend and both Gail/Stella and Colleen/Charlie did a wonderful job!!

Wonderful Snow

Ok, Ok no laughing I am a little late with this post, but things have been a little crazy. Now as I sit here with Hershey at my feet and Spike curled up under my elbow I am able to think clearly. Lets rewind a bit to last Tuesday when the beautiful snow came falling from the sky, schools were closed and the sound of children's laughter could be heard all around. The excitement of sledding and building snowmen was in the air.

As the snowballs were flying around my back yard and the girls and dogs were running around, (yes even Hershey gave into some running, maybe his foot was a little frozen) a smile crossed my face. How good it is to see Al and the girls and the dogs all running around in the pure clean snow. It always seems that the world is so at peace when it snows and that people have the chance to stay home and enjoy time with their families.

Hershey is familiar with the powdery white stuff growing up in PA and loves it. He especially likes to eat it, go figure, a Lab wanting to eat! Spike on the other hand has only seen a very light dusting of snow, so this was a wonderful new experience for him. He loved chasing his ball and then throwing it and watching it get buried. It was like a new game of find it every time he threw the ball. Snowballs were another fascination because they just disappeared. The sled was not so much fun for him, but he did love chasing the girls on it.

I hope you all had as much fun as we did and enjoyed the beautiful snow!!

Rally Trial 1/17-1/18

Please join me in congratulating Charlie/Colleen and Gail/Stella in a successful Rally Trial this weekend. I was so proud of them. We all learned a lot and they were champs on the course.

The dogs did a wonderful job in the building and on the course. Stella showed us she could be very quiet and except a new situation, Wow impressive!!

Charlie was so relaxed and had no problem chilling out till it was his turn.

Both Gail and Colleen were calm and did a wonderful job. I think they had fun and they were sure great on and off the course!!

They were both happy to receive their ribbons and we look forward to the next trial in Feb. At the Feb trial they have the opportunity to get their Rally level 1 title. Very Exciting!!!

The Turkey is in the oven the Cranberry Casserole is made, I sit here and have a moment to reflect before the family all arrives. As I sit here and think about the past year I remember why I became a dog trainer. I love the dogs and I love their presence in our lives. For me they fill a space and need that nothing else can. I would like to think this is the same for every dog owner out there.

Some dogs have had a rougher start than others, some are genetically challenged, some are so agreeable and calm, while others are active and love the daily hikes and romps with the kids or their grownup friends. There are so many different dogs to choose from and even within a certain breed they can differ so much. Just like human personalities you need to find the dog with the temperament that is compatible. Maybe you are very active and want the dog to take with you on adventures, some of us want the underdog or the dog who may find it hard to find a home because of behavioral issues and we are willing to be patient and work with them to give them the best life possible, maybe you would like a companion to snuggle, even the care givers can find a dog to nurture with physical disabilities or is it the dog you want for your kids. Whatever the reason for choosing a dog choose carefully dig deep and be sure you are clear on what you want and don't fall for that cute face or extra sweet disposition if the dog is not truly what your looking for.

So as I sit here to reflect, I think of how thankful I am for wonderful people like all of you who have and care for your dogs each and every day. you love them as they love you and you are thankful to have them share your life. I am thankful for the opportunity to share my expertise with you to help improve your dogs and teach them how to have manners and be part of our lives. I am thankful for all of you who have rescued dogs and given them a second chance at a wonderful life. I am thankful for those of you who have tried to help a canine friend in any way, even if through training you were unable to make the match work.

In closing I would just like to thank all of you over the years who have been touched by the love of a dog and freely given that love back to them. Thank you to all who have taken on the challenge of training your dog to be the best it can be. Training and loving your dog is a lifetime commitment and I am thankful for you who have chosen to take this on, by giving of yourself you are able to feel the love your dog has to give back!

So today on this special day of giving thanks don't forget to hug your dog, try to find some humor if he steals the turkey (it's really your fault you weren't watching) Don't get upset when he throws up because he has such a cute look on his face that hypnotize people into droping food on the floor for him to gladly clean up, Make sure you find time to excercise him so he won't rip Aunt Sally's new skirt, Watch the kids don't get to rough with the dog and when you hear the kids all screaming your dogs name it is time for the dog to come in and take a short nap.

Keep training and keep the love flowing. Keep a smile on your face and praise your dog often. Good Dogs make your life happier and healthier!!

Spike with his new Kong Wubba toy

This month I am very proud to say I will be spotlighting a wonderful toy from THE KONG COMPANY. It was my pleasure to talk to Mark Hines from the Kong Company and discuss my plans for featuring toys from The Kong Company. Kong Wubba (catchy name)

This wonderful toy has quickly become one of Spike's favorites! As you can see by the above picture he has a great time with it.

The Wubba is a Kong shaped toy that is covered with durable fabric. The Wubba is NOT a Kong covered with Fabric, but rather a softer squeezable toy with a squeaker for lots of interactive fun. I love to use this toy when Spike and I go out for a game of fetch, I also use it for training purposes and when I take Spike into new environments (especially the vet).

The amazing properties of this toy make it very versatile. It squeaks so I can use the sound to get and keep attention. The Wubba has a nice long tail that I use to get the prey instinct going and get Spike even more interested in the toy. Once the instincts are going we can either have a game of tug or I can throw the Wubba for a wonderful game of fetch. The unique shape of the Wubba gives it an unpredictable bounce making it a challenging fetch toy for any dog.

Can you use it for training? Absolutely!! Pull out the Wubba instead of food treats when you are ready to teach your dog something new or reinforce already learned commands. Take it on walks with you for distraction, if your dog reacts to other dogs or you find keeping his attention difficult when out in the big world. As a distraction approaches begin by squeaking, then wave it in front of your dog, next tell him to sit then toss it to him and play a little tug. in the 10 seconds it took you to do this you now have your dog's undivided attention and the distraction passes.

The Wubba comes in various sizes ranging from puppy to extra large. Be sure to get the size best suited for your dog. This is not a chew toy and you should not leave it around for your dog to chew. If you use it as a play/training tool and put it away after each use your dog will be that much more excited when you pull it out the next time.

Mini Schnauzer up for adoption

Heidi, a 6-year old Miniature Schnauzer, was rescued from a North Carolina puppy mill 3 months ago. She has been living with her foster mom, 3 foster canine brothers, and 1 foster feline brother and gets along with everyone. Heidi is a love sponge. She is doing extremely well with her housetraining (no accidents in over a month) and is learning to walk on a leash. She loves her toys and loves to run in the backyard with her foster brothers. Heidi will do best in a home without young children (though she likes visits from them) and will make a wonderful companion.

Medical: Heidi was spayed soon after her rescue from the mill. At that time, she tested positive for heartworms. Heidi has completed heartworm treatments and was given a clean bill of health from the vet. Feral Cats need your help

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We have a population of stray cats in our area. The cats are being provided for as far as food. The problem is that cats multiply very quickly- there has already been another litter this month. In fact, the population probably started out at 2 or 3 cats and has multiplied to many more. If we continue to let the population grow, Animal Control will get involved- trapping and killing them.

What Can We Do?
Luckily, there is a solution. Trap/neuter/release (TNR) is the only method proven to be humane and effective at controlling feral cat population growth. With TNR, all the feral cats in a colony are trapped, neutered/spayed, given vaccines and health checks and then returned to their territory where caretakers provide them with food and shelter. Young kittens that can still be socialized, as well as friendly adults, are adopted out to good homes.

Why TNR?
The returned colony guards its territory, preventing unneutered cats from moving in and beginning the cycle of overpopulation and problem behavior again.
Another significant advantage to TNR is that, when practiced on a large scale, it lessens the number of kittens and cats flowing into local shelters. This results in lower euthanasia rates and the increased adoption of cats already in the shelters.

We Need You!
In Raleigh, NC we have organizations that are lucky enough to help out populations such as ours. Normally, a spay/neuter costs around $250. That does not include shots or health checks. Operation Catnip has been contacted and we have been accepted for their services! For $25 a cat, we can solve this problem. We are asking for your donations to help our cat population- every dollar helps! As winter approaches, non-monetary donations (food, old dog houses which can be used as shelters, traps, etc) are very helpful as well!

Class was a little chilly last night, but everyone persevered. The dogs didn't seem to mind at all. We have hit mid way point and all the dogs and their owners are doing great!! I definitely see improvement in how the dogs are responding to their owners and how owners are working with their dogs.

Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to next week and continuing to be impressed and proud.

Sargent Gwen Beberg saved this puppy from a burning trash pile. The pup has given his unconditional love and support . All Sgt. Beberg is asking if for Ratchet to come home with her and the military will not allow it. If Ratchet stays in Iraq he is sure to die. Please help and sign the petition!

Brier Creek Pet Hotel Class

Today was the first of our fun and focus classes Brier Creek Pet Hotel. It was wonderful. The training yard has enough shade that we were able to train comfortably. The yard is fenced in and has a direct access from the street where we park. The class is held from 9:30-10:30. If you are interested in joining us let me know. The class has a variety of activities and I try to make it lots of fun and at the same time reinforcing all their obedience commands. We have a wonderful group and we have lots of fun. I hope all who joined me today enjoyed the new area and the class.

Hot Days

Wow, is it ever hot out there. Be sure to walk your dogs in the early morning or night time. It seems to be cooling down a bit around 8:00pm and the sun is down that helps a lot. Be sure to bring water along for your furry friends.

I was at he Dog Days event at Bond Park today and it is very hot. They do however have baby pools and water stations set up everywhere for the dogs. I am glad they do, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some humans joining their furry friends in the pools.

Stay cool and keep your doggies cool as well!!

Outdoor Safety Tips for your Dog

The weather is slowly getting nicer and we are getting outside more and more with our faithful companions. Here are some important reminders when you venture outdoors with your dogs.

Be careful on walks and also close to home and in your own yards. There are many hazards that we are not aware of.
Do not let your dog eat grass that has been treated with pesticides. (if you are unsure keep your dog away)
Watch for mushrooms popping up in the yard. when we get a lot of rain mushrooms just appear. Some varieties can cause liver failure. So keep an eye out for them and get rid of them in your yard and keep your dog away from them on walks.
There are also some common plants that are poisonous to your dog. Some lilies and rhubarb leaves can lead to kidney failure. Rhododendron and Azaleas can affect the heart as well as other plants like oleander, foxglove and Yew. Be careful and read cautions or look up plants before planting in your yard.
Do not leave your dog unattended in the yard or house with a training or choke collar on. The rings can easily get caught on something and cause choking.
Do NOT leave your dog outside in the sun and heat for long periods of time this can cause heat stroke. Be sure when your dog is outside you have clean fresh water available for him/her.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs

Body temperature of 104-110 degrees Fahrenheit
Heavy panting, rapid heartbeat and glazed eyes
Dark or bright red tongue and gums
Excessive thirst and/or profuse salivation
Fever, Lethargy,dizziness or lack of coordination
Staggering, Stupor and or seizures
Bloody diarrhea or vomiting
unconsciousness

Dogs especially susceptible to heat
Elderly, very young or ill dogs
dogs with snub noses
overweight dogs
large/heavy coated dog breeds
dogs with heart or respiratory problems

If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke, move the animal into the shade or air conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towels to your pets head, neck or chest or immerse in cool (not cold) water. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes.
TAKE YOUR PET TO YOUR VETERINARIAN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Do not leave your dog unattended in a car on Hot days on an 85 degree day the interior temp of your car can sky rocket to 120-130 degrees in just a few minutes.

Exercise your dog in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler

Hose your dog down before a walk in very hot weather or walks that do not have shade

Take water along on walks for you and your dog.

Use sun screen. Yes your dog can get sunburn!

Have a kiddie pool available with clean water for supervised play.

Use Flea and tick preventative

Have a great time outdoors with your pet, be safe and have fun!!

The flea and tick season is upon us in full force. The ticks and fleas are emerging everywhere. The big question is what do I use on my dog?

Belive me there is no easy answer, I have done quite a bit of investigating in search of the perfect preventative. There is a lot of information out there on each and every product.

I do not endorse any one product. I am not a vet , but I am a dog owner with 2 dogs in my care who I want to make sure are cared for in the safest way possible. This article is to provide information that I have found in my search and to help you in your search for the best product for your dog. You cannot pick the best product by one article, so I encourage you to do some research on your own as well. Talk to your Vet or see what your friends are are using and ask them if they are satisfied with it.

When choosing a flea and tick preventative you have to take your dog into consideration. How old is your dog, is your dog allergic to flea bites, does he have sensitive skin, is he sick, is she pregnant, does she lick herself a lot, do you have children, do yu have cats, etc... The list goes on and on but I think you get the idea.

There are many different kinds of flea and tick preventatives. They range from flea collars to shampoos, dips, powders and topical. each with its own benefits and draw backs.

Read the packages or product information on the Internet thoroughly. Be sure to read warnings, reactions and research the active ingredients. Make sure you have the correct dosage for your dog (if you need to, take them to the vet to be weighed). Read the package for special application instructions, they are not all the same, some you apply in one long strip, others in 2 places and still others only between the shoulder blades. Make sure you also read the cautions for children and adults and cats!

I am going to give you a summary of some of the top brands of topical. Some of these companies also make collars, shampoos and sprays, so if you prefer these methods to topical be sure to take a look.

Frontline Plus for dogs.
This is one of the most popular and well known preventative.
Frontline Plus completely breaks down the flea life cycle by effectively stopping the development of new fleas.
Frontline plus also kills all stages of four major ticks including the ones that transmit lymne disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Always read and follow the directions carefully before applying product to your dog
Frontline Plus remains effective even after bathing, water immersion, or exposure to sunlight.
Apply ever 3 months for flea control, and every month for tick control
Active ingredient: Fipronil 9.8%

Katie is now 16 years old and has been battling leukemia since she was 8. This child has endured more than most of us do in a lifetime. Walgreen's will be having a community celebration Sat, April 19, from 11 am - 2 pm. They will be having a pet photo shoot, so bring over your furry friend and lets get some pictures. Anyone does we can post them on the blog. They will also be having other activities for both children and adults, so be sure to stop by and See what is going on.

All the proceeds will be going to The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against Cancer.

Claudette was a rescue from a puppy mill and is lucky enough to have found a wonderful home with Tim, Lauren and Eliot. She is very sweet and loves to cuddle and be pet (all the time). She is figuring out how to play. Lack of socialization has made it hard for her to understand play, but with love and Eliot she should be playing like a champ in no time.

March 15, 2008 Saturday- Crabtree Lake Class Cancelled!!!

The weather seems to have a different idea of what we should be doing today. I will have to cancel the class at Crabtree Lake today. That last torrential downpour sealed our fate. Even if it clears up now the training area at the lake will be unusable.

Everyone should practice inside or when the weather clears a bit get those dogs out for a walk.

Have a fun day and I will see you all next week at 2:30 over at Lake Crabtree.

Please join me in welcoming Riley and her Mommy Sosha to our wonderful group. Sosha started with me before she even had a dog. We searched for just the right dog and viola! she is the proud owner of Riley. Riley is doing great with her training, but needs more distractions, so here they are. Welcome!!

Training went great and we sure had a great day for it. The park is getting more crowded with the beautiful weather. Lots more distractions for our wonderful dogs. We did a lot of practice with stays and attention, as well as heeling. Check out the attention Heuy is giving Drew! Sadie has an excellent stay! Emma's third class and she is doing great. she is walking on a loose leash and paying attention great!

What a lot of fun Miles had he loves to have his nose to the ground. Maybe by the time he is 1 year old we will get that nose up for more that a few steps. Miles is the youngest of the group, but he sure is hanging in there and working with the big dogs. He is learning very quickly and Mary is to be congratulated for putting in the time. His attention is amazing when his nose is not glued to the ground! Keep up the good work!

A little note sent out to Toni. I hope you are feeling better. Your immune system goes down and everything coming down the road is going to get you. We miss you so take it easy and feel better.

Keep practicing and I will see you Sat!

Saturday's class

Class on Sat, Feb 19, 2008 at lake Crabtree was lots of fun.

We started the class off with a CGC test for a Rottweiler, which went very well. She earned her CGC certification no sweat.

At the end of class today we played doggie says. That was a blast. Everyone got a turn with their dog to be the caller.

We have a new dog joining our class. Her name is Emma. She is a glden/colie mix. Sara adopted her form the Wake County SPCA. Emma and Audrey get along beautifully. Sara has some training ahead of her, but she is more than capable of handling Emma. Join me in welcoming Emma.

My Mom has also joined the class with Sadie and they are enjoying themselves.

Coleen's Dad worked Charlie Sat in class. He did a wonderful job with Charlie.

Drew is also working with Heuy in class. They have been working with me for what seems likeforever, but I know it is not. They are doing very well. Heuy seems to be enjoying this class. Although he is not getting his Spike playtime.

Erika is bringing along Briscoe for som great distraction training. We are hoping to get him to come with distractions (especially at the dog park) keep up the good work Erika.

I can honestly say that my Mom, Dad and I had way to much fun with the dogs.

Spike loves to jump and Hershey is a little bit of an oaf, but he will do anything for food!!

Sadie actually was working for hotdogs and having a lot of fun.

The AKC is currently expanding their programs to include mixed breed dogs and their owners. The All American Dog Club would provide a way for mixed breeds and owners to become involved with the AKC.

$50,000 will be donated to the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue group, plus his share of $100,000, proportionate to the number of votes he received.

This is an wonderful achievement for Hank and the NRGRR. Congratulations!!!

Today I read an article titled "Dog's aren't born mean, it's the people that make them that way". It made me think of all the dogs that have a hard life or no life at all. Dogs that are tied out in yards with no human companionship, nobody to play with and left with no food or water. Then there are other dogs that are brought into this world for no other reason than to fight or be bait dogs.

I had read the above article shortly after receiving an e-mail from the Best Friends Animal Society announcing the decision for the dogs seized from Michael Vick's Infamous Kennel. The 22 at the Best Friends Shelter will be rehabilitated and then placed in appropriate homes when they are ready. Any that cannot be placed will live out their lives at Best Friends Animal Society. This was a great victory for the dogs, who are helpless animals without a voice.

So when I came across the "Dogs aren't born mean" article in the Dallas News I thought how closely the articles are related. The article in the Dallas News reminds us that dogs are our responsibility and leaving them tied up in the yard and other cruel treatment is a tried and true way of making them mean.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that a dog routinely tethered or chained up is nearly 3 times more likely to bite than a dog that's fenced or kept indoors. According to a Pennsylvania based anti-tethering group, 194 children nationwide have been killed or maimed by chained dogs in the last 5 years. Domestic dogs don't choose to be chained, they are chained up and made prisoners by people.

Quoting from the Dallas news "Humans, disgracefully, do choose to mistreat them, neglect them, let them roam loose, chain them up, or egg them into aggressiveness." Does this mean get rid of a breed? No it means we need to stop the cruelty! If you choose to outlaw a mean breed the same, people making them fight will simply choose another breed. A veteran animal control officer in Louisiana recently told a television station "I've seen the Chow go through that phase, and the Rottweiler and the Doberman... The Pit Bull has just hung in there longer than any of those dogs."

I think making stricter laws would help this situation. Some cities are considering limiting the number of animals a household can keep , require a universal requirement for pets to be spayed or neutered and BAN tethering of unsupervised dogs to polls or trees. This is a much more practical and humane way to help the situation than the almost impossible breed bans.

Breed Bans would not exist if it weren't for individuals who tarnish the breeds name.

So take a look around and you decide.
